À la recherche de temps perdu! We were intending to go to Trèves but took a wrong turn and ended up at the Cirque, which we used to visit regularly when the kids were young but we haven’t been to in around a decade.
We arrived early, a blessing given how narrow and winding the road is. We managed to get down with no traffic coming the other way. Almost as good on the way back to the top.
Well, not too much has changed since we were last here! You now have to pay for parking (4 euros) and the menu at Le Mas Gailhou no longer offers omelette au roquefort, but apart from that it’s more or less as it was when the kids were tiny.
Clambering down the steep rocks to the icy pool at the bottom was a bit more of a challenge given my aching knee(s) but it was lovely to plunge in to the icy water of le grand marmite. Noone else was jumping into the river below, however, so I decided not to risk that, having read the guide to les Baignades de l’Herault which cautions severely that the river conditions change all the time.
Jenny found a rock pool to lie in, which unbeknownst to me, she has wanted to do for ages. We also had a pleasant stroll over the old bridge, where many years ago I saw an adder basking in the sun.
Lunch at the crêperie was delicious. We were lucky to get the last table. Jenny had warm goats cheese salad and I had the planche d’êté with melon, jambon sec, watermelon, a salad, mozarella with tomatoes, tsatsiki and a tapenade. It was excellent, with the usual fresh crusty bread, although I wished they were still doing the omelettes!
We ended up at the tourist shop at La Baume Auriole, and I bought a map of the pilgrimage routes of the Chemin de Saint Jacques, a snip at 7 euros 90! We are hoping to do the Camino soon, we’ve talked about it for ages!
