We are sur le bateau rolling our way over to France!
The Transmanche ferry is swaying lazily from side to side, but we set off in foul weather and high winds, and it’s only just starting to settle down. As we left Newhaven, the waves were surging in slow motion over the breakwater and the small lighthouse, making them look small and vulnerable.
DFDS has redesigned the interior decks so the duty free is bigger, and there is more seating. The rest is as it always is: bored passengers, screaming kids, tired patient parents.
Well, it’s the start of the pilgrimage down south. I am reading a book on pilgrimage by a journalist who walks the path from Southampton to Canterbury.
A tentative start. She stays in a budget hotel and goes to Ikea for coffee. Hope it warms up.
In the same spirit of budget travel. We will be in the Dieppe Ibis hotel by around midnight and I bought a bottle of Pinot Noir from the Ardèche and a bar of Suchard milk chocolate to round off the evening.
All good so far. The featured image photo is from the wall that runs alongside the ferry port once you get through passport control and customs. I’ll post a few more but this one has a suitably watery vibe.
