We had breakfast at a bakery called Coquelicot in Montmartre, near Place Pigalle, still a red light area but much subdued compared to the old days.
Coquelicot means poppy in French. The frosted-glass pichets of water are decorated with the red flowers, and the bakery has red posts that make it distictive. You have to walk up the steep steps above Pigalle, and the bakery is at the top.
It’s a friendly place, and breakfast was delicious. I had an omelette which came with cheese and ham, a dressed salad and wonderful fries. Others tried the goat’s cheese salad and my daughter, somewhat sophisticated, had a boiled egg with smoked salmon.
The staff were friendly, and luckily it was a beautiful day so we sat outside on the wooden tables drinking okay coffee and beautifully refreshing freshly-squeezed orange.
